Northline Seafoods converted a 400’ x 100’ deck barge into a fish freezer tender. The vessel can freeze and store up to 15 million pounds of frozen salmon from Bristol Bay, AK. Crucible was responsible for system design and USCG submittal documents under 46 CFR Subchapter I. Crucible developed six crane foundations using Finite Element Analysis and provided onsite support to oversee pipe system installation. We supported development of the fire and safety plan, electrical one line drawing and other deliverables necessary to gain a Certificate of Inspection from USCG.
While at Curtin Maritime, Josh Horst, Dan Thrush, Cath Farish and Cameron Newett oversaw the design, construction, and outfitting of the DB AVALON: North America’s largest clamshell dredge barge. The vessel was ABS Load Lined as a Manned Barge and inspected by the USCG under 46 CFR Subchapter I. Josh Horst managed the project for Curtin Maritime, oversaw all regulatory submittal documents, and developed the project cost estimates.
Crucible managed the drydocking and 5-year overhaul of the US Army Corps of Engineers' dredge, Yaquina, on behalf of Everett Ship Repair. The project included hull repairs, dredge engine and deck gear overhauls, and ABS inspections. Crucible oversaw bow thruster replacement and coordinated dockside services including steam heat, waste water, and fresh water hookups. An incline test and sea trials were completed prior to redelivery.
The Crucible team has significant experience with heavy lifts, transfers, and salvage. Shown at right is the removal of the pilothouse from the OSV Conti. The house was refurbished and reinstalled on the DB AVALON dredge barge. We have worked on undersea demolition of concrete structures, transferring a pedestal crane from one barge to another, and many barge loading/mobilization projects.
We have worked on a many 46 CFR Subchapter T and Subchapter K passenger vessels. These projects have ranged from 12 passenger pilot boats to 150-passenger high speed catamarans. We have an excellent understanding of regulations related to passenger vessels such as fire zone, 5A spaces, interior furnishing requirements, machinery arrangements, stability analysis, and structural detailing.
Crucible team members have worked on repairs, repowers, and drydocking for a wide variety of tugboats. We have supported fleet transitions to Subchapter M compliance, exhaust system compliance with California Air Resource Board (CARB) and marine systems and electrical system upgrades.
Josh Horst spent six years at Kvichak Marine Industries as Lead Engineer for nearly a dozen high speed aluminum vessels. These projects included pilot boats, utility craft, and a 95' hovercraft built for the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. We are experienced with developable hull shape creation, lofted longitudinal stiffeners, structural detailing, and appropriately designed (light weight) marine systems.
